How I tested — and what I refuse to score

Time to first hover

How long from unboxing to a stable hover, measured with people who had never flown before. Anything over five minutes loses points.

Behaviour in wind

Every drone flew the same exposed coastal path. I scored drift, recovery speed and how watchable the footage stayed.

Footage you'd keep

Not spec sheets. I shot the same reveal, push and orbit on each drone and judged the clips on a phone and a laptop.

Survivability

Driveway landings, indoor prop strikes, one genuine hedge incident. Cheap drones must tolerate beginner mistakes.

Total cost to fly

Price plus the batteries and props you'll actually need, checked on the retailer page on August 10, 2026.

What I won't claim

Maximum transmission range. Legal line-of-sight rules mean I can't verify a 2 km or 10 km figure, so those stay labelled as manufacturer claims rather than test results.

Questions people actually ask

Is a $99 drone actually any good in 2026?

Yes, with limits. Electronic stabilisation and flight controllers have improved enough that a well-made budget drone produces watchable, shareable footage. What you don't get is a mechanical gimbal, long flight times or serious wind tolerance. For a first drone that trade is usually right.

Do I need to register a drone with the FAA?

Recreational flyers must register aircraft weighing 250 g or more, and every recreational pilot needs the free TRUST safety certificate regardless of weight. Most drones on this page are deliberately under the 250 g line.

Why is the Skyhawk 4K ranked above DJI?
