Cheap drone vs expensive drone: what the extra $300 actually buys
Four things genuinely improve with price, and three things marketing pretends do. Know the difference before you spend.

The one upgrade you can see instantly: the gimbal
If you compare footage from a $70 drone and a $300 drone in a straight line on a calm day, you will struggle to tell them apart on a phone screen. Now turn, or add wind. The expensive drone stays glassy; the cheap one develops a subtle sway and micro-jitter through the turn. That difference is a mechanical 3-axis gimbal — a physically stabilised camera mount — and it is the single upgrade that shows on screen.
Budget drones use electronic stabilisation, which crops and warps the frame in software to cancel motion. It has improved enormously and it is genuinely good enough for family footage, holiday clips and social posts. It is not good enough for paid work, and it never quite holds a slow cinematic push.
The honest question isn't 'which is better' — it's 'will anyone watching your footage notice'. For most people posting to a phone-sized screen, no.
Flight time, which changes how you shoot
Budget drones give you eight to fifteen minutes per battery. Premium minis give you around thirty. That sounds like a doubling of value and it is actually more than that, because a fifteen-minute battery forces you to rush: you launch, you grab whatever's in front of you, you panic-land at low voltage. A thirty-minute battery lets you fly to a position, wait for the light, and shoot the frame you planned.
The cheap fix is more batteries. Three budget batteries cost less than a single premium one and get you the same total air time, at the cost of landing to swap. For learning, that's a fine trade — the landings are practice.
Obstacle sensing: the insurance policy
Downward sensors for landing appear even on budget models and they matter. Full 360-degree obstacle avoidance appears around the $400+ mark and is a genuinely different thing: the aircraft refuses to fly into a tree even when you tell it to.
How much you value that depends entirely on where you fly. Open fields and beaches? Barely at all. Wooded trails and back gardens with washing lines? It will pay for itself the first time it saves the aircraft.
Transmission range, which is mostly theoretical
Spec sheets advertise 2 km, 10 km, 15 km. Almost none of it is usable, because you are legally required to keep the drone within visual line of sight, and an under-250-gram drone becomes an invisible speck somewhere around 400 metres. What range figures actually predict is link stability at ordinary distances: a drone rated for 10 km holds a rock-solid video feed at 200 metres, while a drone rated for 500 metres may stutter at 150.
So read the range number as a proxy for reliability close in, not as a promise about distance. That reframing kills most of its purchasing power.
Three things price does not reliably buy
Megapixels. Sensor size and processing determine image quality; a 48 MP number on a tiny sensor mostly produces bigger files of the same picture.
Ease of flying. Budget drones with altitude hold and one-key takeoff are frequently easier for a beginner than a premium drone with a deep menu tree and a dozen intelligent flight modes.
Durability. Cheap drones are light, and light things survive impacts that would crack a heavier airframe. My most-crashed cheap drone still flies; the expensive one has a hairline crack from a landing that was gentler.
Matching the drone to the actual person
Buying a first drone: stay under $100. Roughly half of first drones stop being flown within two months, and finding that out cheaply is a feature, not a compromise. If you love it, you will know within three weeks and the upgrade will feel earned.
Buying for a child: prioritise propeller guards, headless mode and spare props over camera specs. The camera is the part they use least.
Buying because footage is going into something that pays or matters: buy the gimbal. Stop reading comparison articles and buy the gimbal.
Buying to fly in genuinely difficult places — wooded, windy, crowded: buy the sensors.
The upgrade path that wastes the least money
Start cheap. Fly it forty times. Write down, honestly, what stopped you getting the shot you wanted. If the answer is 'wobble in turns', buy a gimbal. If it's 'ran out of battery mid-shot', buy flight time. If it's 'I flew it twice', you've saved yourself $300 and learned something true about yourself.
Almost nobody regrets starting cheap. Plenty of people have a $500 drone in a cupboard.
