How to fly a drone: your first week, hour by hour

Seven short sessions that take you from terrified hovering to shooting a usable orbit — and the two habits that prevent most crashes.

Before you go outside

Charge everything the night before, including the controller and your phone. Install the app and complete the firmware update at home on wi-fi, not in a field on mobile data — a half-finished update is the most avoidable way to lose a first flight. Read the two pages of the manual that cover the emergency stop and the return-to-home button. Those are the only two controls you must know before your first launch.

Then pick your spot: open grass, no trees within thirty metres, no roads, no people, no dogs. A school playing field on a Sunday morning is the classic answer.

Day one: hover, and nothing else

Take off, climb to about chest height, and hover. Hold it there for a full minute without touching the sticks except to correct drift. Land. Repeat until the battery is done. It feels absurdly boring and it is the most valuable session of the week, because it teaches your hands the difference between the drone drifting and the wind pushing it.

Do not fly higher. Do not fly further. Resist the urge to shoot anything.

Day two: the orientation problem

Every new pilot's first real crash comes from the same thing: the drone turns to face you, and now left is right. Fix it early. Hover at chest height, rotate the drone 90 degrees, and practise flying gentle squares. Then 180 degrees, facing you, and do it again.

The trick experienced pilots use is to keep the aircraft's nose pointed away from themselves whenever possible, and to think in terms of where the nose is going, not where your body is. Coloured rear arm stripes exist for exactly this reason — use them.

If you get disoriented mid-flight, the answer is always the same: let go of the sticks. Almost every modern drone will simply stop and hover, giving you time to think.

Day three: altitude and distance, slowly

Now go up. Climb to about thirty metres, hover, and look at the live view rather than the aircraft — this is the first time the drone becomes a camera rather than a toy. Fly a straight line out fifty metres and come back. Then a hundred.

Set your return-to-home altitude above the tallest thing nearby before you do any of this, and press return-to-home once deliberately just to see what it does. Watching it work while you're calm is far better than discovering it while you're panicking.

Day four: wind, on purpose

Pick a breezier day and fly the same drills low. You want to learn what your specific drone does in air that isn't still: how far it drifts before correcting, how much extra battery a headwind return costs, how the footage degrades.

The one rule: always fly out into the wind and come back with it. A drone fighting a headwind on the return leg at 20% battery is how drones end up in trees.

Day five: your first real shots

Three moves cover ninety percent of good drone footage. The reveal: start low behind an object, rise slowly to expose the landscape. The push: fly slowly forward at a fixed altitude towards a subject. The orbit: circle a subject while keeping it centred.

Fly all three at half speed. Every beginner flies too fast, and speed is what makes footage look amateur. If it feels slow while you're flying it, it looks right on screen.

Day six: panorama and modes

Now explore the automated modes — panorama, quickshots, tracking, whatever your drone has. Doing this after you can fly manually means you understand what the mode is doing and you can take over when it does something dumb. Doing it first means you never learn to fly.

Day seven: build the checklist habit

Fly a normal session, but do it with a spoken checklist: props, battery, home point, airspace, wind, line of sight, RTH altitude. Say it out loud. Do that for two weeks and it becomes automatic, and automatic pre-flight checks are the difference between pilots who lose drones and pilots who don't.

After a week of this you will be a genuinely competent recreational pilot — not because the drills are hard, but because almost nobody does them, and the people who do stop crashing.
