Budget drone buying guide
Five decisions decide which drone you should buy. Everything else on a spec sheet is noise.
1. Weight, before anything else
In the US, recreational aircraft at or above 250 g need FAA registration and Remote ID. Under it, the paperwork mostly disappears — though every recreational pilot still needs the free TRUST certificate. This is why almost every consumer drone advertises "under 249 g". Weigh it as you fly it: added batteries or accessories can push you over.
2. Gimbal or electronic stabilisation
A mechanical 3-axis gimbal is the only upgrade you can see instantly, and it starts around $299. Electronic stabilisation on a good budget drone is genuinely fine for family footage and social clips, and it wobbles slightly in hard turns. If your footage is going into paid work, buy the gimbal. If not, don't.
3. Flight time, or more batteries
Budget drones give 8–15 minutes; premium minis reach about 30. Three spare budget batteries cost less than one premium battery and buy the same air time — at the price of landing to swap, which is useful practice anyway.
4. Sensors matter where you fly
Downward sensors for landing are common and worth having. Full 360° obstacle avoidance appears around $400+ and only earns its money if you fly near trees, wires and buildings. On a beach it does nothing.
5. Ignore the range number
You must keep the drone in visual line of sight, and a sub-250 g drone disappears from view long before 2 km. Read range figures as a proxy for link stability close in, not as usable distance — and treat them as manufacturer claims, because nobody can legally verify them.
